The origin of the name “Murudeshwar’’ dates to the time of Ramayana. The story is an interesting one around “How Ravana wanted to attain immortality like the Hindu Gods and worshipped Shiva to obtain the Atma Linga. Shiva, pleased with the devotion of Ravana, gives him the Atma Linga on one condition. Condition was that it should not be placed on the ground otherwise it will become immovable. One of its pieces fell down in the Murudeshwar at the place where Murudeshwar Temple is situated. The temple we see today was built in the 16th century by a local chieftain named Tuluva King. Later, the temple was renovated and expanded by several rulers. It includes the Vijayanagara Empire, the Keladi Nayakas, and the Wadiyar dynasty.
