Katra is a town in the Reasi district of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, situated at the foot of the Trikuta Mountains, where the shrine of Vaishno Devi is located. Katra is located 24 km (15 mi) from the town of Reasi, 42 km (26 mi) from the city of Jammu and around 685 km (426 mi) north of the national capital New Delhi and is the base for pilgrims visiting the Mata Vaishno Devi Temple.

Katra serves as the base camp for pilgrims who visit Vaishno Devi. It has hotels, guest houses, restaurants, and dhabas. Free accommodation is also provided by some registered trusts in the form of sarais for the poor.

At Mata Vaishno Devi Cave, the goddess is in the form of a five and a half feet tall rock which has three heads or the Pindies. On Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrimage, devotees make traditional offerings to Mata of chunri (a red coloured drape), sarees, dry fruits, silver or gold ornaments, cholas, flowers etc. 

The holy cave of Mata Vaishno Devi is said to have been discovered by Pandit Sridhar, a Hindu priest. Goddess Vaishnavi appeared in the dream of the priest and instructed him on how to find her abode on Trikuta Hills. The priest following her instruction heads out for the journey after the dream and finds the cave as instructed earlier.

Mata Vaishno Devi appeared to him and blessed him with four sons. She also gave him the boon of being the custodian of the cave.

Places To Visit in Vaishno Devi

1. Vaishno Devi Temple

 Vaishno Devi is said to be Moonh Maangi Muradein Poori Karne Wali Mata (the mother who fulfils the wishes of her children). The darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi in the holy cave is in the form of three naturally formed rocks which are known as pindies. These pindies manifest the three forms of the goddess as Maha Kali, Maha Saraswati and Maha Lakshmi.

More than one crore devotees visit the Vaishno Devi temple each year. Mata Vaishno Devi temple has rich history and heritage attached to it. The cave’s importance is depicted in folktales which tell that Goddess Sati’s skull had fallen and that the goddess resides here in the form of a five and a half feet tall rock which has three heads or the Pindies.

2. Charan Paduka – See Vaishnavi Maa’s Footprints

This is among the most auspicious places to see in Katra that lies on the way to the cave or bhawan of Maa Vaishno Devi. Charan Paduka is where the foot imprints of Maa can be seen on a rock slab. Mata Vaishno Devi or Vaishnavi was being chased by Bhairavnath, the saint turned demon. She was moving towards her cave when she decided to rest here for a while. That is when her footprints got lodged in the rocks. Visit Charan Paduka to seek the blessings of Mata before continuing your ascend to her cave.

3. Bhairavnath Temple – Take In The Majestic Views

After drenching in the spirit and energy of Maa in Vaishno Devi temple, move up a bit to pay Baba Bhairavnath a visit, one of the best Katra sightseeing places. You just have to walk 2 to 3 km upwards from Vaishno Devi to reach Bhairavnath temple. The view up here is more majestic and mesmerising.

This temple is dedicated to saint Bhairav who later turned demonic. He was killed by Maa Vaishno Devi here. Since he resented his sins, he was forgiven. In a bid to improve connectivity between Delhi and Vaishno Devi shrine located in Katra, Jammu and Kashmir, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) took the initiative to construct Delhi-Amritsar-Katra corridor, under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

A 670-km greenfield expressway project will connect Bahadurgarh border in Delhi with Katra via Nakodar and Gurdaspur in Punjab.

It’s not easy to trek in the morning for darshan vaishno devi but lots of people do that. That’s incredible because in your normal routine you can’t ever claim the stairs, you use the elevator. That’s the power you feel while you visit vaishno devi.

After you reach there and look around yourself , nature gives you relief and you feel relaxed. That’s your prize for your efforts to reach out there. That incredible beauty of nature,the star, the moon, the light all complement each other.

When your prayer and darshan are complete then you must have to visit bhairo baba mandir. Because it’s there manyata that if you’re going to visit vaishno devi and come without the darshan of bhairo mandir then your prayer is incompleted. After that when you come down there are lots of shops,and stalls are present for your convenience. And also there are many transportation modes available so you can easily find your ride.
