Sri Raghavendra Swami, originally known as Sri Venkata Natha, was born in 1595 to Sri Thimanna Bhatta and Smt. Gopikamba. He was born on a Thursday, Sukla Navami of Phalguna month, when the moon was in Mrigashīrsha Nakshatra. His birthplace was Bhuvanagiri, near present-day Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu. Sri Venkatanatha displayed exceptional intelligence from a young age and became a skilled Veena player, thanks to his father and grandfather’s teachings.

During a visit to Kumbakonam with his wife, Sri Venkatanatha and his family were invited to a function. Unfortunately, the hosts treated him poorly and asked him to earn his food by performing a task. They requested him to make sandalwood paste for all the guests. While preparing the paste, Sri Venkatanatha continued his practice of chanting stotras and mantras. When the guests applied the paste, they experienced a burning sensation all over their bodies. Intrigued by this, the hosts asked Sri Venkatanatha for an explanation. He revealed that the burning sensation was a result of the Agni Suktam, a hymn from the Esoteric Vedas, which he chanted while preparing the sandalwood. This incident showcased the eternal power of Vedic Mantras. Then after his death the place was dedicated to him as a temple.
