Overview

The land of mountains, Himachal Pradesh, is best known for its stunning trekking locations. Owing to the panaromic beauty of the state and the serene air, it is a major attraction among tourists.  Hampta pass trek is one of the most popular treks of the region.

At an altitude of 4270m, the Hampta pass connects the Kullu valley to the Spiti valley. This moderately difficult trek enthralls the spirit of trek enthusiasts. Amidst the majestic hills, the trek takes you through beautiful pastures, dazzling streams and deep forests of oak, maple and spruce. The fascinating trek begins from Manali. The 5day trail takes you from Manali to Chika via Jobra. The immensely beautiful landscape deserves to be captured in your camera.

From Chika, the trek further takes you to Balu ke Ghera. Ascend gradually to reach Siagoru. The bright hued wild flowers, the snow-topped peaks and the tall tress add to the beguile of the landscape. Descend gradually to reach the beautiful Chandratal. The pristine lake is one of the finest alpine lakes of the country. The awe-inspiring view of the heavenly lake will fascinate you.


History

The mesmerizing beauty of the Chandratal lake is believed to have allured a mermaid. It is said that a mermaid lives in the bottom of the lake. Locals even believe that a shepherd from Hansa village in the Spiti valley fell in love with the mermaid and used to spend time with her in the lake.

Stamina : Fit enough to carry a bagpack of around 8 kg easily . Candidates with cardiovascular or respiratory problems are advised not to join the trail as the high altitude of the trail can induce problems.


How To Reach

Nearest airport: Bhuntar is the nearest airport. Taxis and buses are easily available from Bhuntar to the starting point of the trek. The Bhuntar airport is well connected to major cities like Chandigarh and Delhi.

Nearest railway station: Jogindar nagar station is the nearest railhead. It is 166 kms from Manali. Buses are easily available between Delhi to Manali route. An overnight bus from Delhi takes you to Manali in 12-14 hours.

ITINERARY IN BRIEF

Day 1 : Manali – Jobra – Chika

  • Trek begins from Manali. Next destination is Jobra can be reached by two hours of driving.
  • The actual trekking starts from Jobra.
  • Chika is 2kms away and 45 minutes of trekking is needed to reach their.
  • Overnight stay in tents.

Day 2 : Chika – Balu ke Ghera

  • Balu ke Ghera is at a distance of 9.5 kms from Chika.
  • The route is beautiful embellished with wildflowers.
  • 6 kms of mostly descending trek takes you to Balu ke Ghera (11,900m)
  • Accommodation in tents.

Day 3 – Shea Goru – Chatru drive – Chandratal

  • Shea Goru sits at an altitude of 14,100ft and is 9kms away from Balu ke Ghera.
  • To reach the enchanting lake start early.
  • It is at a distance of 9kms and it can covered in 5 hours.
  • As you reach the Chandratal, the exotic view of the lake surrounded by nature’s most alluring elements will leave you bewildered.
  • Headback to the campsite.

Day 4 – Shea Goru – Chatru drive – Chandratal

  • To reach the enchanting lake start early.
  • It is at a distance of 9kms and it can covered in 5 hours.
  • As you reach the Chandratal, the exotic view of the lake surrounded by nature’s most alluring elements will leave you bewildered.
  • Headback to the campsite.

Day 5 : Chatru – Manali

  • Drive back to Manali which is 85kms away.
  • The enthralling trek ends here.

DETAILED ITINERARY

Day 1: Manali – Jobra – Chika

The trail commences from the beautiful resort town, Manali. At an elevation of 2080m, the Himalayan town is believed to be the abode of the great sage, Manu. Two hour drive from Manali takes you to Jobra. From here, trek for 45 minutes to cover the distance of 2km and reach Chika. Accommodation in tents.

Day 2: Chika – Balu ke Ghera

Chika is set at an altitude of 10,100ft. To reach Balu ke Ghera, you need to cover 9.5km. The 6 hour trek is mostly descending. Beautiful wildflowers embellish the route. Boulders of Rani Nallah and Gendarme welcome you delightfully.  Balu ke Ghera sits at an altitude of 11,900m. It is a huge barren land that displays a striking view of the Himalayas. Overnight stay in tents.

Day 3: Balu ke Ghera – Shea Goru -Hampta pass

Start early to reach Shea Goru which is 9kms away. At an elevation of  14,100ft, Shea Goru is incredibly beautiful. It takes 10hours to reach their. Ascend gradually for one hour followed by steep ascent till you reach Hampta pass. Admire the alluring view of the landscape. Two hours of steep descent and one hour of walking takes you to the campsite.

Day 4: Shia Goru – Chatru drive – Chandratal

Start early in the morning to reach the pristine lake. The lake is located at distance of 7kms that can be covered in 5 hours. Gradual descent on moraine and drive from their  to reach Chandratal. The blue waters of the pristine lake surrounded by hills portray the beguile of nature wondrously. Click pictures of the splendid lake. Headback to the campsite.

Day 5 : Chatru – Manali

Wake up to the captivating view of the mountains. Drive back to Manali which is 85 kilometers away. The trail ends here loading you with tons of memories.
