When life gets monotonous and the sand slips underneath your toes, you gotta take some chill-pill. Well, if you know what I’m talking about then it’s the hippie culture that we oftentimes secretly embrace.

It’s that guilty pleasure that I often seek to while planning my trips. And out of all the places, I have immensely enjoyed the hippie culture of India for its peace-loving people and flamboyant surroundings.

The best part is you can trace this vibrant culture in India since the Golden Days. The first time when Beatles visited Rishikesh and spread its spirit of the trail of magic here, this country paved its path of nirvana connecting several hippie locations worth exploring.

So, here I’m going to list the Top Places where you can Enjoy the Hippie Culture downtime!

Goa

Definitely, Goa is the first place that comes to my mind when we plan a trippy vacation. Whether you want to lose yourself to psychedelic music in North Goa or find yourselves in the tranquillity of the South Goa, you’ll find everything in this hippie town! And the matter of fact is thousands of hippies settle down in Goa forever. The reason is they simply can’t get enough of the sand and the sun.

Malana

A friend of mine said that there’s always this one trip to the hills after which our life takes a turn. Well, he was talking about the mesmerizing Malana. Situated in Himachal Pradesh amidst the snow-capped Himalayas, this beautiful town is famous for its weather, picturesque views and the hashish. Yes! Malana cream is one of the world’s best hash and this is what makes this place home to numerous hippies.

Kasol, Himachal Pradesh

Kasol is a quaint little suburb that is wildly popular around the world of hippies. This place has attracted the attention of many hippies, particularly people of the Israeli origin. And this is evident since many signboards in Kasol are written in Hebrew.

Kasol is known for its amazing snow-clad backdrop and greeneries. But it’s the availability of some great quality hash here, which attracts lots of backpackers.

Hampi, Karnataka

The temple town of Hampi has so much to offer to the hippies. Well, it’s not just a place of religious and historical significance. So, I’m going to introduce you to an altogether different world in Hampi- the world of Hippies. A small village near the Hampi river called Virupapur Gadde is a sought after destination by western backpackers, due to the laid-back aura of the place.

It is a perfect place to chill at peace and groove your body at some crazy psychedelics.

Varkala

Varkala is situated in Kerala. The “hippie haven” of Varkala Offers you a spectacular beach view to let you get lost in your deep thoughts. No one will bother you here because no one cares. Great music, small cafes and similar kind of tourists make it a perfect hippie destination.

Gokarna

Wish to visit somewhere less crowded but as hippie as Goa? Then, Gokarna should be on your bucket list. Situated in Karnataka, Gokarna is generally famous for Mahabaleshwar Temple. However, Gokarna is not only about history and religion. In fact, it’s all about miles of tranquil pristine beaches, psychedelics and spiritual discovery.

Rishikesh

The yoga capital of India has a lot more to it. A Paradise for the backpackers and the adventure enthusiast. Mostly rife with foreign tourists, Rishikesh is where you’ll see hippies smoking with the ‘cool’ holy men. And how can we not acknowledge its Beatle themed ashram that makes it the hippie capital of India? Camping on the banks of Ganga, river rafting and many more fun activities are waiting for you!

Varanasi

Colorful and spiritual, this land is one of the oldest hippie destinations in India. The idea of moksha is visible in the endless lines of saints and sadhus smoking their chillums. So many hippies are settled in this holy city, to seek ‘nirvana’.
