It was early spring and shivratri was around the corner. All the Shiv bhakts are extremely excited to celebrate this festival and my family was one of them. We had to choose a destination that was recreational as well as spiritual. Amongst the various Jyotirlingas, we finally decided upon Jageshwar Dhama as this town of temples would be perfect for us.

From treks, stargazing, yoga centers and numerous temples at shorter distances, this 2500 year old Dhama was absolutely the best choice also because of the Shivaratri festival that it holds every year. Moreover, The Delhi to Jageshwar temple distance was facilitated with well connected motorable roads which made our plans even stronger and We couldn’t wait to be a part of this mega festival.

About Delhi

Delhi is surrounded by various architectural beauties and other recreational activities.  The capital of our country has some of the most popular and beautiful temples too, like Akshardham temple, ISKON, Lotus temple and many more. However, the most pristine and sought after temples for a Hindu devotees are the Jyotirlinga and the Chaar Dhama.

Just 400 kms from the capital is Jageshwar, which is famously called the Town of Temples. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas which is very intricately designed. The benefit of living and travelling from Delhi is the well connected pathways and transportational mediums. About Jageshwar Temple

Amidst the tranquility and greenery is situated the ancient temple, Jageshwar in the Almora district of Uttarakhand. The name Jageshwar literally means, the valley of Gods and rightly said as it is one of the Jyotirlinga amongst the 12 others. As suggested, Jageshwar temple is devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati i.e Shiv-Shakti. This temple premise is a town of temples, comprising 124 other stone temples all belonging to the 9th and 13th century in it, all dedicated to lord Shiva.

This ancient temple is associated with various mythologies. It is believed that Lord Shiva performed Tandava at the same spot where the temple resides, with the purpose of killing a demon called Dandak.

Others also believe that Pandavas of Mahabharata visited the Jageshwar temple during their Mahaprasthanam and there are four temples dedicated to them in the temple premise.

The architectural style owned by the temple is Nagara, and according to the Archaeological Survey of India( ASI), this 2500 year old temple was constructed during the pre medieval era. More than 25 inscriptions are visible on the temple walls in Sanskrit and Bramhi along with other intricately designed sculptures and walls. Jageshwar temple, is famous for its Swayambhu linga also referred as the Nagesh Darukabane and was a popular centre for Lakulish Shaivism(28th form of Shiva). The main temple in the premise is devoted to Bal Jageshwar, or Child Shiva.

Jageshwar temple which is one of the Dhamas includes various larger and smaller temples and also includes the famous Dandeshwar Temple, Chandi-ka-Temple, Jageshwar Temple, Kuber Temple, Nanda Devi or Nau Durga, Nava-grah temple, Mrityunjaya Temple,a Pyramidal shrine, and Surya Temple.

Places To Visit In Jageshwar Temple

Vriddha Jageshwar Temple

This temple is just 2-3 Kms upstream to the Jageshwar temple. It is believed that this was the initial abode of Lord Shiva before he came down to the Jageshwar temple.

Archaeological Survey of India Museum

Near the temple is a museum set up by the Archaeological Survey of India. The museum has a variety of sculptures(nearly 150) and deity statues from ancient times.Situated 200 metres from the temple, this museum is one of the major attractions for tourists who love history, art and culture. From four armed chamunda devi, Navagrahas to Shiva drinking poison, the figures are mind blowing. The museum is open from 10 in the morning to 5 PM in the evening and closed on Fridays.

Jat Ganga and Brahmakund

These holy water bodies flowing in the backyard of the temple premises are one of the essential parts of worshipping in the Jageshwar temple. Devotees take a dip in them during their visit and especially during the Jageshwar fair.

1. Dandeshwar Temple and Other Temples

This temple is supposedly the tallest temple in the Kumaon region. Dandeshwar is the abode of lord Shiva as the staff bearer and is around 2 kms from Jageshwar. The form of Shiva Linga worshiped here is an uncut natural rock. Near the Dandeshwar temple are various other prominent temples like Chandi-ka-Temple, Jageshwar Temple, Kuber Temple, Nanda Devi or Nau Durga, Nava-grah temple, Mrityunjaya Temple that are worth visiting.

2. Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary

Binsar is situated 52 kms from Jageshwar, and is a popular tourist attraction because of its Wildlife Sanctuary. It is the perfect spot for trekking amidst nature and gives tourists an unforgettable experience.

The distance between Jageshwar and Almora is 35 kms and is roughly a 2 hour journey. From Deodar trees to the Jat Ganga river, this place is ideal for people who love peace, tranquillity and greenery.  Near the water body, camping, stargazing are among the   very prominent and favourite activities of the tourists. How To Reach Delhi To Jageshwar By Air

The nearest airport to Jageshwar is Pantnagar Airport which is 150 kms away from Jageshwar. This distance can be easily covered via a bus/car/ taxi. The aerial distance between Delhi and Pantnagar is  nearly 226 km that can be covered in a maximum of 2 hours.  Four flights on a weekly basis are prevalent in this area. After reaching Pantnagar, a cab or a taxi can take you to Jageshwar.

How To Reach Delhi To Jageshwar By Train

The distance between Delhi and Jageshwar is nearly 400 kms.There’s no direct train to this destination, however the nearest train station is Kathgodam which is 125 kms away from Jageshwar and a 4 hour journey via taxi/ cab. Trains from Delhi are frequently run to Kathgodam as it is the major gateway to the Kumaon regions. Nearly 2 trains run from Delhi to Kathgodam on a daily basis.
