What to know before visiting Dhankar Monastery

Perched dramatically on a cliff at an altitude of 3,894 meters (12,774 feet), Dhankar Monastery is one of the most spectacular and ancient monasteries in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh. Dating back over 1,000 years, this Gompa (monastery) belongs to the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism and offers breathtaking views of the confluence of the Spiti and Pin Rivers. Known for its rich history, stunning location, and spiritual significance, Dhankar Monastery is a must-visit for travelers exploring Spiti.

Backdrop

Dhankar, which means “Fort on a Cliff”, was once the capital of Spiti and served as a fortress-monastery where Buddhist monks and rulers (Nono) took refuge. The monastery houses ancient murals, scriptures, and a statue of the Dhayan Buddha (Vairocana), making it a cultural treasure. Nearby, the newer Dhankar Gompa, built for better preservation, continues to be a center of Buddhist teachings and meditation.
