Alchi Monastery

Alchi Monastery, located on the banks of the Indus River in Ladakh, is one of the oldest and most significant Buddhist monasteries in the region. Unlike other monasteries perched on hilltops, Alchi is built on flat ground, offering a unique architectural and cultural experience. It is renowned for its ancient wall paintings, wood carvings, and intricate sculptures, making it a spiritual and artistic treasure.

Backdrop

Dating back to the 10th–11th century, Alchi Monastery was founded by Rinchen Zangpo, a revered translator and scholar who played a key role in spreading Buddhism in the Himalayas. The monastery complex consists of temples, stupas, and prayer halls, with artwork influenced by Indian, Tibetan, and Kashmiri styles. The monastery is no longer an active religious center but is preserved as a heritage site under the Likir Monastery.
