Lamayuru Monastery, one of Ladakh's oldest and largest monasteries, is a serene Buddhist retreat located at an altitude of 3,510 meters. Known for its dramatic landscape, it sits atop a rugged hill overlooking the mystical "Moonland" terrain, which resembles the moon's surface. The monastery belongs to the Drikung Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism and is an important spiritual center, offering a peaceful escape into Ladakh’s rich Buddhist heritage.
Lamayuru Monastery dates back to the 11th century when the famous Indian scholar Mahasiddha Naropa meditated here. According to legend, this region was once an immense lake, which dried up after Naropa’s blessings, making way for the monastery's construction. Over time, it became a flourishing monastic institution and is still home to around 150 monks today. The monastery is also renowned for its ancient murals, Buddhist scriptures, and prayer halls.
