What to know before visiting Thiksey Monastery

Thiksey Monastery is one of the most stunning and iconic monasteries in Ladakh, often compared to the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet. Located 19 km from Leh, this 12-story monastery belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism. It is home to over 500 monks and features an impressive 49-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha, sacred shrines, stupas, and ancient Buddhist manuscripts.

It is strategically built on a hilltop, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Indus Valley. The monastery is also known for its morning prayer ceremonies, where monks chant sacred hymns, creating a serene and spiritual atmosphere.
