Churdhar Peak is the highest peak in the outer Himalayas, standing at 3,647 meters (11,965 ft). It is located in Himachal Pradesh, near Sirmaur district, and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, including peaks like Kinner Kailash and Shivalik ranges.
The trek is categorized as moderate to difficult due to its steep inclines, rocky terrain, and long-distance trekking. It requires good physical fitness and endurance, especially during the winter when snow makes the trek more challenging.
The trek is around 18–20 km one way, depending on the chosen route. It usually takes 7–9 hours to complete the ascent and around 5–7 hours for the descent. Most trekkers complete it as a two-day trek, with an overnight stay near the summit.
There are three main routes to Churdhar Peak: Nohradhar (16 km), Sarain (8 km), and Chopal (7 km). The Nohradhar route is the most popular and scenic, while the Sarain and Chopal routes are shorter but steeper.
The ideal time for the trek is May to June and September to November when the weather is pleasant and the trails are clear. Winter treks (December to March) offer a thrilling experience but require snow trekking gear due to heavy snowfall. Monsoons (July to August) should be avoided due to slippery trails and landslides.
Yes, trekkers can stay at small dhabas and shelters near the Churdhar Temple, where basic food and lodging are available. Many trekkers prefer to carry tents and camp near the summit for a more immersive experience.
It is essential to carry trekking shoes, warm clothes, rain gear, water, dry snacks, a headlamp, a first-aid kit, and trekking poles. If trekking in winter, additional snow gear, gloves, and extra layers are necessary.
Churdhar Peak holds religious and historical significance as it is believed to be associated with Shri Chureshwar Maharaj and finds mention in the Ramayana. The gigantic Shiva statue at the summit, the panoramic views of the Himalayas, and the diverse flora and fauna make it a unique and rewarding trek.
While beginners with good fitness can attempt the trek, it is best suited for trekkers with prior experience due to its length and elevation gain. Proper acclimatization and endurance training are recommended before attempting this trek.
The most common starting point is Nohradhar, which is about 80 km from Solan and can be reached via Shimla, Solan, or Chandigarh by road. Regular buses and taxis are available from these cities to Nohradhar.
