Nonetheless, you are on a rollercoaster ride of adventure and emotions from the comfort of your blanket and a bowl of popcorn. Here is my “too good to be true”  list of all-time favorite trekking movies of Hollywood, to lighten up your spirits this fall. 

1. The Mountain

The story is of two opposite brothers, the younger one wants to reach the site of the plane crash to rob the dead but needs the help of his older mountaineer brother. After a lot of turmoil, the elder one agrees and they venture towards the crash site near Mount Blanc the way back is a test of patience and good faith, but also nature’s way of punishing.

2. Vertical Limit

The film is about an expedition gone wrong on Mt. K2 where the sister of famous mountain climber Peter Garette is struck with her crew in a crevice. The challenge is for Peter to gather a team and rescue his sister along with her team before the unfortunate happens.

3. Touching the Void

The film revolves around the dilemma of life and death. Two young climbers – Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, are determined to be the first ones to reach the summit of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes but are about to meet their worst fates on the descent, where Simpson breaks his leg and Simon has to carry him down was an enormous storm is waiting for them. 

4. The Beckoning Silence

Based on the book, The Beckoning Silence written by Joe Simpson the film retracts the epic mountaineering tragedy of 1936 where 5 climbers met their unfortunate fates on their way to scale the north face of the Eiger mountain in Switzerland.

5. The Asgard Project

A spectacular cinematic experience that follows Leo’s ambitious plan alongside Stanley Leary to do the first free ascent of the north face of Mt. Asgard which is located deep in the arctic and wingsuit the descent. But things start to go wrong and reaching the base becomes the biggest challenge.

6. The Wildest dream

The film is an attempt to recreate the ill fates of British Climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine during their summit of Everest in 1924. The mountaineers attempting to do this are Conrad Anker and Lou Houlding.

7. 127 Hours

The film is a survival biographical drama about a man trapped beneath a boulder in an isolated canyon at Bluejohn Canyon, Utah. The man has to resort to desperate measures for survival until he is rescued which is after 127 hours. 

8. Wild

The film talks about a recently divorced woman, Cheryl Strayed who wants to turn a new leaf in life and decides to go for an 1100-mile trek along Pacific Crest Trail. The journey helps her through the odds and helps her discover her real self.

9. The Summit

The documentary is a take on the 2008 disaster of Mt. K2 where 22 international climbers were on the summit and within 48 hours 11 had died or simply vanished into thin air.

10. Tracks

The film is an adaptation of Robin Davidson’s memoir, Tracks. The film is about a woman who in search of solitude treks across the Australian desert with four camels and a dog.

11. A Walk in the Woods

The film revolves around an author, Bill Bryson who in search of peace and solitude decides to hike the Appalachian Trail along with his old friend, Katz.

12. Everest 

The movie is a biographical survival screenplay about the 1996 disaster at the Mt. Everest. The movie focuses on the two expedition groups who tried to outlast the tragedy.

13. Meru

The film is a story of three elite climbers who have to feel the most intense emotions of obsession and loss as they try to climb up Mt. Meru.

14. The Long Start to the Journey

This documentarian masterpiece is metaphorical and literal ups and downs felt by Chris Gallaway as he tries to trek Appalachian Trail. Experiencing the severities of nature and his physical being in an attempt to reach Mt. Katahdin, Maine.

15. Free Solo

The documentary is an account of a professional rock climber, Alex Honnold who tries to conquer the first free solo of the famous El Captain’s 900 m vertical wall at Yosemite National Park.
