What to know before visiting Badrinath

Nestled in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, at an altitude of 3,133 meters (10,279 feet), Badrinath is one of the holiest pilgrimage sites in India. It is home to the revered Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and is part of the Char Dham Yatra and the Chhota Char Dham Yatra. Surrounded by the majestic Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, and located near the Neelkanth Peak, this sacred town offers a perfect blend of spirituality, history, and breathtaking natural beauty.

Backdrop

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu meditated in Badrinath, and Goddess Lakshmi took the form of a Badri tree to protect him from the harsh weather—hence the name "Badrinath." The temple is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century and has been a significant pilgrimage center for centuries. The Alaknanda River flows nearby, adding to the divine charm of the place.

Highlights

  • Badrinath Temple: One of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu, with a striking black stone idol of Vishnu.
  • Tapt Kund: A natural hot water spring where pilgrims take a holy dip before visiting the temple.

  • Mana Village: India’s last village near the Indo-Tibetan border, home to the Vyas Gufa and Bheem Pul.
