Gangotri, nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand, is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and the origin of the sacred Ganges River. Located at an altitude of 3,100 meters (10,200 feet), it is home to the Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The breathtaking landscapes, snow-capped peaks, and spiritual aura make Gangotri a must-visit destination for devotees and nature lovers alike.
According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga descended from heaven to Earth at Gangotri after King Bhagirath's penance, to cleanse the souls of his ancestors. The Bhagirathi River, which originates from the Gaumukh Glacier (19 km from Gangotri), is considered the actual source of the Ganges. The sacred temple of Gangotri was built by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha general, in the 18th century.
