What to know before visiting Chashme Shahi

Chashme Shahi, meaning “Royal Spring”, is a beautiful Mughal garden in Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir. Built in 1632 by Ali Mardan Khan under the orders of Emperor Shah Jahan, the garden is famous for its natural spring, which is believed to have medicinal properties. It is the smallest among the three famous Mughal gardens of Srinagar but is renowned for its charming terraces, flowing water streams, and Persian-style architecture.

Backdrop

The garden is built around a natural freshwater spring, which originates from the Zabarwan Mountains and flows through three terraced levels before merging into the Dal Lake. The water is believed to have healing properties and was once sent to the Mughal emperors for drinking. The garden offers a mix of Persian, Mughal, and Kashmiri landscaping, featuring vibrant flowerbeds, well-maintained lawns, and stone-carved walkways. The stunning view of Dal Lake and the surrounding mountains makes Chashme Shahi a peaceful retreat.
