It is the official residence of the Abbot of Ladakh, the head of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery features beautifully decorated prayer halls, golden prayer wheels, and a large statue of Avalokiteshvara with 1,000 arms and 11 heads, symbolizing compassion and wisdom.
